Maui Legends

As part of Matariki we re-read the legends of Maui. We then retold a legend and created artwork. Below is my work.

Maui's Fish

Once upon a time there was a demi god called Maui. His brothers wanted to go fishing but they didn’t want to take Maui. At nighttime Maui snuck into his brother’s waka and hid. In the morning Maui woke up from the sound of the sea and he waited until the waka was far out in the moana and then he jumped out and said to his brothers, “Now I will show you!”  Maui’s brothers were shocked, angry and annoyed that Maui had snuck onto their boat.  Maui tells his brothers to keep paddling and they paddled all night until they are far, far away.  Then Maui was happy for them to stop and start fishing. Maui’s brothers were jealous of him because he was smarter and stronger then them so they wouldn’t let him use any of their bait. Maui had to use some blood from his nose as bait. Maui used his grandpa’s magical jawbone to fish with. He threw his line out and waited. Then he had a great big fish on his line. He heaved and heaved until he got a  great stingray on his hook.  He pulled and pulled and then said a karakia to make the giant stingray float up to the surface.  Then Maui said to his brothers, “I need to go and get my magical hook, leave the fish alone while I am gone.”  Then while Maui was gone the brothers hacked into the stingray and it became the North Island.  The South Island is the waka that Maui and his brothers used to catch the giant fish and Stewart Island is the anchor of the waka.

Well done for working with Jaxon to complete this project. You both needed quite a bit of teacher support but we got there! I really love the artwork that you created. I think the tinfoil sea creatures look great and your giant stingray looks quite scary! Well done.
