The Beekeeper

Quick Write Number One - The Beekeeper

For the next two weeks we are going to work on ‘Quick Writes.’  This is where you are given something to write about (a writing prompt) and you only have 10mins to write as much as possible using this writing prompt.IMG_1185.JPG

For our writing prompts we will use either images or short videos.

The purpose of this is to practise writing fluently.

When we look at our writing prompt we will have about 10-15 mins to discuss it and brainstorm some ideas and vocabulary.

Our learning goals are to:
-write a description, using powerful words and phrases
-include some Te Reo Māori
-carefully check that our sentences make sense and have correct punctuation and spelling.

When we are writing we need to think about…

  1. What do I want my reader to see?
2) What do I want my reader to hear?
3) What do I want my reader to smell?
Tips:
-look closely at the picture or video
-think about the three key questions and the learning goals
-give yourself time to plan and write

Do your writing here

It was a sunny day in the summer.
The honey was really sweet.
The smell was really sugary.
The beekeeper was as gentle as a pepe.
All you could hear was the humming from the pi.

Maui Legends

As part of Matariki we re-read the legends of Maui. We then retold a legend and created artwork. Below is my work.

Maui's Fish

Once upon a time there was a demi god called Maui. His brothers wanted to go fishing but they didn’t want to take Maui. At nighttime Maui snuck into his brother’s waka and hid. In the morning Maui woke up from the sound of the sea and he waited until the waka was far out in the moana and then he jumped out and said to his brothers, “Now I will show you!”  Maui’s brothers were shocked, angry and annoyed that Maui had snuck onto their boat.  Maui tells his brothers to keep paddling and they paddled all night until they are far, far away.  Then Maui was happy for them to stop and start fishing. Maui’s brothers were jealous of him because he was smarter and stronger then them so they wouldn’t let him use any of their bait. Maui had to use some blood from his nose as bait. Maui used his grandpa’s magical jawbone to fish with. He threw his line out and waited. Then he had a great big fish on his line. He heaved and heaved until he got a  great stingray on his hook.  He pulled and pulled and then said a karakia to make the giant stingray float up to the surface.  Then Maui said to his brothers, “I need to go and get my magical hook, leave the fish alone while I am gone.”  Then while Maui was gone the brothers hacked into the stingray and it became the North Island.  The South Island is the waka that Maui and his brothers used to catch the giant fish and Stewart Island is the anchor of the waka.

Persuasive writing why we should have pets

We have been having a go of at persuasive writhing. Here is my persuasive writing of it's a good idea to have pets.

Title
A Short Statement about the topic.
eg. ‘Rugby League Is A Great Sport’

IT’s A Good Idea To Have Pets

Overview/ Statement of position
A brief statement of your view about the topic.  What you believe or want to argue.
Most people around the  world love pets. I agree with them.

Series of Arguments
Reasons
Your points supporting your view about the topic.  Your arguments to support your statement and information to support these arguments.

Remember
-argument
-supporting detail, reasons, examples

Primarily, pets are good for guard dogs! For example,  if a robber tried to break into your house the  dog could stop the robber or scare  him or her away. Another job the guard dogs  can do is  guard the animals on the farm from wolves and bears.

Secondly, pets are good at sniffing out disease! For example dogs can tell if you are going to have a epileptic fit  and try to warn   you quickly.  Another  disease  they can sniff out is canner!  Dogs are great for blind people, they can help them live a better life.

Thirdly,  pets are good at getting pests! For example if you have a rat in your house your pet will go and catch the rat. Animals can be trained to go into our forests and catch pests that can kill our native birds.

Finally pets can be  trained for jobs! For example airport sniffer dogs  sniff the people and see if he  has been having drugs or carrying drugs on his body. Also another job is a police dog they can do heaps of things like rescue people,  catch burglars and sniff out lots of things.

Concluding statement
Summing it up.  A summary of your arguments and your view on the topic.

In conclusion , I think that people should have pets because, dogs are good guards, they can sniff out diseases, they can kill pests and they can be trained to do special jobs.  Therefore I think it is important to have pets.

Persuasive writing why we should fix our feld

We have been having a go at writing a piece of persuasive writing . Here is my piece of writing about why we should fix our field.

+
Title
A Short Statement about the topic.
eg. ‘Rugby League Is A Great Sport’

Fix Our Field!

Overview/ Statement of position
A brief statement of your view about the topic.  What you believe or want to argue.
I strongly believe that our field (whira) needs to be fixed! This is because the field was constantly out of use, we need the field for special events, we have specific PE gear we are not using and we need the space to train for tournaments. For these reasons our field needs to be fixed.

Series of Arguments
Reasons
Your points supporting your view about the topic.  Your arguments to support your statement and information to support these arguments.

Remember
-argument
-supporting detail, reasons, examples

Firstly, the field used to be constantly muddy and out of use.
By fixing the field it will not be so muddy so we should be able to use it more often.

Secondly, we need the field (whira) for the hangi and special events. When the field is really muddy we can't dig a hole to put the hangi in because there is too much water.

Thirdly, we need  the field (whira) for our PE gear. The PE gear is expensive and going to waste because we don't have space to use it.

Finally, we need the field to train for tournaments and sporting events. We need the field to get fit (ora) and get better skills so we can do better at the tournament.

Concluding statement
Summing it up.  A summary of your arguments and your view on the topc
In conclusion we need to fix our field because the field is always muddy and we need the field so we can have our special events. Our PE gear needs to be used and we all need the space to run around to keep us fit. Please fix our field urgently!
